Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions and answers about Q4OS Trinity desktop.

What is Q4OS?

Q4OS is a Linux distribution featuring the Trinity Desktop Environment, designed to provide a familiar Windows-like experience while offering modern Linux capabilities and security.

What is Trinity Desktop?

Trinity Desktop is a continuation of KDE 3.5, providing a classic desktop environment with traditional menus, toolbars, and window management that many users find familiar and efficient.

Is Q4OS suitable for beginners?

Yes! Q4OS is designed with user-friendliness in mind. The Trinity desktop provides an intuitive interface similar to Windows XP/7, making it easy for new Linux users to get started.

What are the system requirements?

Q4OS has modest system requirements: 1GB RAM minimum (2GB recommended), 5GB storage minimum (10GB recommended), and any x86 or x64 compatible processor.

Can I install Q4OS alongside Windows?

Yes! Q4OS can be installed alongside Windows in a dual-boot configuration. The installer will automatically detect Windows and create a boot menu. See our Windows installation guide for details.

The system won't boot from USB. What should I do?

Check your BIOS/UEFI settings to ensure USB boot is enabled and set as a boot priority. Also verify that your USB was created correctly using tools like Rufus or Etcher.

Installation fails with "No root file system defined"

This means you need to create a root partition (/) during manual partitioning. Assign at least 5GB to a partition with ext4 filesystem and set the mount point to "/".

How do I create a bootable USB?

Use Rufus (Windows), Etcher (cross-platform), or the dd command (Linux) to write the Q4OS ISO to a USB drive. Ensure the USB is at least 2GB in size.

My graphics card isn't working properly

Try installing proprietary drivers through the Additional Drivers utility in System Settings. For NVIDIA cards, install nvidia-driver packages. For AMD cards, the open-source drivers usually work well.

WiFi doesn't work after installation

Some WiFi adapters require proprietary firmware. Check System Settings → Additional Drivers for available wireless drivers, or install firmware packages manually using ethernet connection first.

Audio is not working

Check the audio device selection in System Settings → Sound. Try switching between different audio outputs (HDMI, analog, etc.). You may need to install additional ALSA or PulseAudio packages.

My printer is not detected

Install the CUPS printing system if not already installed: sudo apt install cups. Most modern printers work automatically, but you may need specific drivers for older models.

How do I install new software?

Use the Software Centre for graphical installation, Synaptic for advanced package management, or command line with sudo apt install package-name. See our available applications guide.

Can I run Windows applications?

Some Windows applications can run using Wine compatibility layer. Install Wine through the Software Centre and use tools like PlayOnLinux or Lutris for easier Windows software management.

Where is the Microsoft Office equivalent?

Q4OS includes LibreOffice, which is compatible with Microsoft Office documents. For additional compatibility, consider OnlyOffice or WPS Office, both available in the repositories.

How do I install multimedia codecs?

Install ubuntu-restricted-extras package: sudo apt install ubuntu-restricted-extras. This provides MP3, Flash, and other proprietary codec support.

How do I update Q4OS?

Updates appear automatically in the system tray. Use the Update Manager for graphical updates, or run sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade in terminal.

How do I change the desktop theme?

Go to Trinity Control Center → Appearance & Themes to customize desktop appearance, window decorations, icons, and colors.

The system is running slowly

Check system resources using System Monitor. Consider disabling visual effects, closing unnecessary applications, or adding more RAM if your system has less than 2GB.

How do I access the terminal?

Press Ctrl+Alt+T, or go to Start Menu → System → Terminal (Konsole). You can also right-click on desktop and select "Open Terminal Here".

The desktop won't start after login

This usually indicates a configuration issue. Try logging in to a different user account, or reset Trinity settings by renaming ~/.trinity in your home directory.

Package installation fails with dependency errors

Run sudo apt update first, then sudo apt install -f to fix broken dependencies. If issues persist, try sudo dpkg --configure -a.

I can't access the internet

Check network connections in System Settings → Network. For WiFi, ensure the correct password is entered. For ethernet, check cable connections and router status.

System freezes or crashes frequently

This may indicate hardware issues (RAM, overheating) or driver problems. Check system logs with journalctl -b and consider testing with a live USB to rule out installation issues.
